As someone who enjoys planning travel, I spend a lot of time helping families choose vacations. As a mom, I'm always looking for trips that can keep an 18-year-old, a 14-year-old, and a 12-year-old happy at the same time.
After sailing on Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas, I can confidently say this ship delivered.
From incredible entertainment and amazing food to unforgettable crew members and beautiful ports, Star of the Seas quickly became one of our favorite family vacations ever.
First Impressions
The ship is massive, but somehow never felt overwhelming. There was always something happening, yet it never felt crowded.
One thing that stood out immediately was how clean everything was. The number of touchless features throughout the ship was impressive. Between automatic doors, touchless stations, and constant cleaning, it may have been the cleanest ship we've ever sailed on.
After a week onboard, stepping back into regular public places was eye-opening. You realize just how many surfaces people touch everywhere else.
And of course, every trip to the Windjammer started with the famous:
"Washy Washy!"
The Smart Elevators Actually Work
Let's talk about something I never thought I'd include in a cruise review: the elevators.
The smart elevator system on Star of the Seas is fantastic.
At first, I wasn't sure how I'd feel about selecting your floor before entering the elevator, but after a day onboard, I was completely sold. The system groups guests going to similar floors, making everything move more efficiently.
Even with a ship carrying thousands of passengers, we rarely found ourselves waiting long. More importantly, we didn't experience the usual cruise ship elevator chaos—people cramming in, pressing every button, and stopping on every floor along the way.
The elevators felt organized, fast, and surprisingly stress-free.
In fact, after sailing on Star of the Seas, going back to traditional cruise ship/hotel elevators might be harder than giving up unlimited ice cream.
The Teen & Tween Test
Let's be honest. Parents don't judge a vacation by the brochure photos.
We judge it by whether our kids complain.
Thankfully, Star of the Seas passed with flying colors.
My 18-year-old daughter loved the independence the ship offered. During the day she'd spend time enjoying the pools, mini golf, water slides, and exploring the ship, but in the evenings she really enjoyed the entertainment and spending time with friends she met onboard. Some of her favorite memories came from simply hanging out, listening to music, and enjoying the nightlife atmosphere onboard.
My 14-year-old son was constantly on the move. The basketball courts were his home base, but they were far from his only hangout. He spent time at the teen club, made several new friends, enjoyed Playmakers, tackled the water slides and could often be found shooting hoops somewhere on the sports deck. If we couldn't find him, there was a good chance he was in one of those places.
Our 12-year-old daughter found her own slice of paradise onboard. She loved the Adventure Ocean junior area, made friends quickly, enjoyed the water slides and pool areas, mastered the FlowRider, and loved having activities designed specifically for her age group. Between games (of Ga-Ga ball), pools, ice cream runs, and family activities, she stayed busy all week.
One thing that impressed me most was that all three kids—despite being six years apart in age—found spaces that felt designed specifically for them.
The best part? All three kids found plenty to do, and I never once had to hear those two words every parent dreads on vacation:
"I'm bored."
Or are my kids the only ones who ask that question after you've spent time and money on a fabulous trip?
The Crew That Made the Cruise
The ship was amazing, but the people made it unforgettable.
Parag & Windy
Our Main Dining Room team, Parag and Windiantara ("Windy"), were hands-down the best waitstaff we've ever had on a cruise.
By the second night, they knew our names, our preferences, and exactly how to make us laugh.
Parag was absolutely hilarious. Every evening came with a new joke, story, or bit of friendly teasing. He even taught the kids how to fold banana-shaped napkins.
One of our favorite running jokes involved Central Park. Anytime someone ordered a salad, Parag would proudly explain that he had personally picked the ingredients from "Parag's Garden" in Central Park. By the end of the cruise, we were convinced he was responsible for every plant onboard.
Windy was equally incredible.
My daughters absolutely adored him because he created the most intricate origami designs throughout the cruise. Almost every night he would surprise them with another masterpiece. The girls couldn't wait to see what he would bring next. Each creation seemed more impressive than the last.
Those little moments may seem small, but they became some of our favorite memories from the entire trip.
Honestly, I think Parag and Windy may have been my kids' favorite part of the ship.
Norman
Our stateroom attendant Norman deserves a shoutout too.
The room was always spotless, everything stayed organized, and he somehow managed to appear exactly when we needed something.
Simply put, Norman was the chillest dude ever.
Ship Highlights
One of the reasons Star of the Seas works so well for families is that there is truly something for everyone.
We spent time at the pools, tackled the water slides, tried the FlowRider, played mini golf, explored every corner of the ship, and somehow still didn't get to everything.
The family pool areas were fantastic, especially the kid-friendly spaces near the churro stand. That area became one of our favorite spots to relax, cool off, and grab a snack.
And let's talk about the ice cream.
There was ice cream.
Then there was more ice cream.
And somehow even more ice cream.
I honestly lost count of how many cones were consumed during this cruise.
Another thing we appreciated was how easy pool days were. Fresh towels seemed to be available at every turn. No carrying wet towels across the ship or searching for a towel station. Just grab one and enjoy your day.
For the adults, the Hideaway Pool was a huge win.
Hideaway Pool? YES.
After spending time with the family, having a beautiful adults-only space to relax, enjoy the ocean views, and recharge was fantastic. It quickly became one of my favorite places onboard.
Food Favorites
Everyone has a favorite food spot on a cruise ship.
Mine was El Loco Fresh.
Tacos, burritos, nachos, fresh toppings—it was the perfect quick lunch and became my go-to several times throughout the week.
The Main Dining Room was excellent, and thanks to Parag and Windy, dinner became one of our favorite parts of every day.
Entertainment
The entertainment onboard was outstanding.
Torque
If you're sailing Star of the Seas, do not miss Torque.
The show is absolutely amazing.
One tip: arrive early.
Even if you have a reservation, don't assume your favorite seats will still be waiting if you show up at the last minute. This show fills up fast, and for good reason.
Velvet Elvis
Can we talk about the music?
Velvet Elvis absolutely rocks.
Every time we walked by and heard them playing, we found ourselves stopping to listen. They became part of the soundtrack of our vacation.
Dueling Pianos
Another surprise favorite was the dueling pianos.
We'd stop in planning to listen for a few minutes and somehow end up staying much longer. Great musicians, lots of audience participation, and plenty of laughs.
Casino Fun
For anyone who enjoys a little casino time, my favorites were Mo Money and the Wheel of Fortune penny machines.
They're fun, entertaining, and don't require a second mortgage to enjoy.
Our Ports
Perfect Day at CocoCay
Despite a passing storm, CocoCay was beautiful and exactly what you'd expect from Royal Caribbean's private island.
The beaches were gorgeous, the island was easy to navigate, and there was plenty to keep everyone entertained.
Even with the weather interruption, we had a great day and would happily visit again.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
San Juan was probably our least favorite stop, but that's mostly because of our family dynamic.
With an 18-year-old, 14-year-old, and 12-year-old, spending hours walking historical sites in Caribbean heat wasn't exactly winning any popularity contests.
Instead, we grabbed a Lyft and headed to Playa Isla Verde.
Our driver was great, the beach was beautiful, and chair rentals were inexpensive.
The water was gorgeous.
However, the area was dealing with water shortages during our visit, and restroom options were limited. Combined with the heat, we decided to enjoy the beach for a bit and then head back to the ship.
Puerto Rico felt a little more chaotic than our other ports, but it was still beautiful and worth seeing.
If we return, we'll probably spend more time exploring Old San Juan. This trip, however, our kids were much more interested in beaches and getting back to the ship.
St. Maarten: The Unexpected Champion
St. Maarten wasn't just our favorite port of the trip.
It may be one of our favorite cruise destinations ever.
We booked an island-hopping excursion through a local charter company with Captain Alex and First Mate Jet instead of booking through the cruise line.
Best decision ever.
The smaller group made the experience feel personal and relaxed.
We snorkeled over coral reefs surrounded by tropical fish, swam with sea turtles, enjoyed a delicious barbecue lunch, relaxed in unbelievably beautiful water, and visited Maho Beach to watch planes fly directly overhead.
The water in St. Maarten was some of the prettiest we've ever seen.
What made the day even better were Alex and Jet themselves. They were knowledgeable, funny, professional, and genuinely passionate about sharing their island.
The biggest compliment I can give?
None of us wanted to get back on the ship.
And when you're cruising on Star of the Seas, that's saying something.
I'll be linking their charter information because they absolutely deserve the recommendation.
Final Thoughts
As a travel agent, I boarded Star of the Seas hoping to gain firsthand knowledge for my clients.
As a mom, I left with something even better: memories.
The attractions were incredible. The entertainment was outstanding. The food was excellent. The ports were beautiful.
But years from now, I have a feeling my kids won't be talking about the slides, the shows, or even the destinations.
They'll be talking about Parag's Garden, banana napkin lessons, Windy's origami masterpieces, basketball games, Adventure Ocean, late-night laughs with new friends, endless ice cream cones, and the crew members who made them feel special for an entire week.
And that's what makes a vacation unforgettable.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 Stars
Would we sail Star of the Seas again?
In a heartbeat.
